In another article we stated that it would be correct to give critical support to Mamdani if he was running as an independent socialist but not as a member of the Democratic party, the enemy of the working class and the oppressed including the Palestinians. Eugene Debs said that in the short term his victory will encourage the working class and the oppressed nations but in the long term he will cause demoralization because he will not keep his promises.
A week later Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York, turned to the White House to schedule a meeting with Trump to discuss the cost of living — after the Trump administration withheld billions of dollars in federal aid from the city while threatening further cuts
Zohran Mamdani, announced on Monday that his team had contacted the White House to coordinate a meeting with President Donald Trump. The initiative comes a day after Trump told reporters he wanted to “see that everything works out well for New York,” marking a sharp change of tone between the two men. Mamdani, who will take office on Jan. 1, hopes to discuss the “cost-of-living crisis” in the city with the president.”
The move represents a turn in the hostile relationship between the two. During his election campaign, Mamdani claimed that he was the only one with the moral strength to stand up to Trump, whom he described as a “threat to democracy.” On the other hand, the president belittled Mamdani for months, calling him a “100 percent communist lunatic,” and supporting his main rival.
The proposed meeting, if it takes place, will come at a particularly tense time for New York. The Trump administration has threatened to send National Guard troops to the city, examined the use of a coast guard facility in Staten Island to hold detained migrants, and has already withheld billions of dollars in federal aid from the city while threatening further cuts. The country’s governor, Kathy Howell, has already held preparatory meetings with local leaders and Mamdani himself to discuss ways to prevent the move: After threats and cutbacks, Mamdani changes tone and asks to meet with Trump.
It is time to organize an independent workers party loyal to the working class and the poor. When it will be organized the revolutionaries will fight not only for the minimum program but for the transitional program and propagandize for the full program.
