South Sahara, Israel, Morocco, and the Sahrawi people

Last Friday, the Moroccan Organization for Supporting the Causes of the Nation held 80 demonstrations in 45 cities across Morocco, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Activists took to the streets to denounce ongoing Zionist violence and injustice against the Palestinians, affirming their commitment to the people of Gaza.

While the Moroccan people have made their Pro-Palestinians stance clear, the Moroccan  government continues to be one of the staunchest pro-Israeli regimes in the Muslim world, and the King accepted the invitation of Trump to join the “peace Council”.

For two reasons: the Moroccan government supports Israel. The first one is military training provided by the Zionist monster that also sells weapons to the regime for the next uprising of the Moroccans. The second one is the Zionist support for the Moroccan government repression of Western Sahara and the denial of the self -determination of the Sahrawi people.

Western Sahara is a former Spanish colony claimed by Morocco as its “Southern Provinces,” leading to a long-standing conflict with the independence-seeking Polisario.

Morocco is a monarchy with a parliamentary system, where King Mohammed VI serves as Head of State with significant powers, as he retains ultimate authority, appointing the PM and overseeing key councils in spite of the constitutional reforms following the uprising of 2011.

The Polisario Front is a Sahrawi nationalist movement seeking independence for Western Sahara from Moroccan rule, and is the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, fighting for self-determination through political action and, historically, armed struggle. Backed by Algeria, it has engaged in a long-running conflict, governing parts of the desert territory, with the UN advocating for a referendum on the region’s status.

Polisario’s aim is to achieve independence for Western Sahara and establish the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

It was formed in 1973, initially to end Spanish colonization, it grew into a liberation movement against Moroccan control after Spain’s withdrawal. It is a petit bourgeois left-wing, nationalist front representing various political trends, emphasizing self-determination. It conducted an armed insurgency against Spain and Morocco, resuming conflict in 2020 after a long ceasefire.

It is supported by Algeria and demands a UN-supervised referendum for self-determination, a process stalled for decades. The U.S. is recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty claim, and the UK supports its autonomy plan. While we support the right and the struggle for self-determination of the Sahrawi people led by the Polisario, only a victorious Arab revolution will give South Sahara its right to self-determination.

For the Arab revolution to win, it is necessary to be led by the working-class backed by the poor peasants culminating in a workers’ state, part of the socialist federation of the Middle East.
