According to Al-Akhbar: The United States informed Lebanese President Aoun that there are no guarantees for a comprehensive ceasefire before his visit to Washington, and that the withdrawal and its scope will be an item in the negotiations, not a precondition. At the same time, the American embassy in Lebanon is promising miracles and wonders if Aoun agrees to “a direct meeting between President Aoun and Prime Minister Netanyahu, under President Trump, that will give Lebanon the opportunity to secure concrete guarantees of full sovereignty.”
An opportunity, as we know, is not a commitment, and Aoun, who fears that during the visit he will be photographed with Netanyahu without any Israeli withdrawal from occupied southern Lebanon, froze the visit, which, if held, he would be accused of treason by the Lebanese, which would strengthen Hezbollah.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut is stepping up pressure on the Lebanese leadership. The embassy’s statement reads: “Lebanon is at a crossroads. Its citizens have a historic opportunity to reclaim ownership of their land and shape their future as a truly sovereign and independent nation. Direct contact between Lebanon and Israel, two neighboring countries that should never have been at war, could mark the beginning of a national awakening. The prolonged cessation of hostilities, which was achieved at the request of President Trump, has given Lebanon the space and opportunity to put all of its legitimate demands on the table with the full attention of the US administration: full sovereignty, territorial integrity, secure borders, humanitarian and reconstruction support, and a full renewal of the authority of the Lebanese state over every inch of its territory (i.e., the disarming of Hezbollah) – with the promise of the United States.“
But as is well known, Trump is changing his promises every day which the whole world knows, while Aoun cherishes his life.
Kick out the American imperialism!
Israel out of Lebanon!
