Major (res.) Harel Birnstock, 34, and Werser (res.) Tamir Vaknin, 33, both from Eilat, were killed yesterday (Wednesday) by an explosive device in southern Lebanon. Birnstock commanded a company in the 2855th Battalion of the 55th Brigade, where Vaknin also served. Four other Zionist reservists were seriously wounded in the same incident. They were the first army casualties in Lebanon since late June, when Captain David Hazut was killed in a clash with a Hezbollah fighter. Since the current round of fighting began on March 2, 40 Zionist soldiers have been killed.
The elimination took place yesterday afternoon when the soldiers searched the village, from which Hezbollah fighters withdrew last March, a small force entered a house that had already been damaged in the fighting, to take a better observation post. Shortly afterwards, the explosion occurred. The question is whether the Zionist soldiers were hit by an explosive device placed in the village before Hezbollah’s withdrawal, or whether a squad of the organization recently infiltrated the area controlled by the murderous army and activated the bomb remotely, in real time and at a small range.
Minister of War Yisrael Katz offered his condolences to the families of Vaknin and Birnstock, saying that the two “repeatedly reported for reserve duty out of commitment, dedication and a sense of mission, and fell while working for the security of the State of Israel and the residents of the north.” Katz also wished a speedy recovery to the four reservists who were injured in the incident. He forgot to add that Netanyahu and himself have personal interest in this war.
The Gush Etzion settlers Council issued a mourning notice over the death of the settler Birnstock.
After the bomb exploded yesterday, the army announced a wave of strikes in southern Lebanon, saying they were a response to Hezbollah’s violation of the ceasefire. Earlier, the military had ordered residents of Mansuri, a village in southern Lebanon, to evacuate. The seventh round of talks between Israel and Lebanon’s Quisling representatives, held in Rome, continued yesterday but ended earlier than planned because of the incident.
In practice, the Zionist army does not respect any ceasefire as it is very busy destroying dozens of villages in southern Lebanon.
Over the weekend, another Zionist officer was wounded by gunfire in a clash with Hezbollah fighters during an operational activity in southern Lebanon. Last week, the Zionist army announced that a Hezbollah explosive drone hit an engineering vehicle in southern Lebanon.
Weakening and defeating the army of murderers is in the interest of the world working class.
