The International Socialist League decided to give critical support to the Joint List if it will pledge not to enter the next Zionist government, likely headed by former Chief of Staff Eisenkot, and not to give the future Zionist government any support from outside.
Now Yusef Jabareen, chairman of the Hadash party and the Joint Arab List, says that support for the Eisenkot bloc will have to be based on what he defined as “basic rules that guarantee equality and rights for Arab society.”
In remarks quoted by the Arab Israeli news website Al-Jaramak, Jabareen said that he “opposes any agreement that perpetuates the occupation or ignores the issues of Palestinian society in Israel.”
According to him, it is impossible to accept an agreement that does not include a clear plan for the development of Arab society, and he also rejected cooperation with a coalition that does not present real solutions to the issues of violence and crime that Arab society suffers from.
In an interview with Al-Nas radio a few days ago, Jabareen criticized the approach of Mansour Abbas, the chairman of Ra’am, who advocates joining the coalition in order to gain a position of influence over government policy.
According to him, “every party that joins the coalition becomes committed to its own basic guidelines.” In response to the question, Jabareen did not rule out the possibility that the Joint List would provide a safety net for an alternative coalition that would topple the right-wing government. Eisenkot has already announced that he supports the settlements in the Hirdo Valley.
On this basis, there is no room to vote for the Joint List or for Balad unless it pledges not to provide a safety net for an alternative coalition that would topple the right-wing government. Experience shows that following the fall of a right-wing government, the government that will be formed will bring an even more right-wing government to power.
