Netanyahu’s sick fantasies

Yossi Schwartz, 06.05.2025

On the 5th day of May, Amos Harel writes in Israel:

“Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, the man who manages to steer the government’s policy even though according to all the polls his party does not pass the electoral threshold, said this morning at a conference of the newspaper B’Sheva that “from the moment a maneuver begins, there is no withdrawal from the territories we occupied, not even in exchange for abductees. We are occupying Gaza to stay. There is no more entry and exit.” He also explained that all the residents of the Gaza Strip will be evacuated south to the Morag route, meaning that the intention is to push more than two million people into an area that is less than a quarter of the area of the Gaza Strip.”

“It’s worth putting it simply: We are marching towards another disaster in the Gaza Strip. If US President Donald Trump does not decide to intervene in what is happening there around his visit to the Gulf states next week, Israel will expand its military operation in the Gaza Strip after the visit ends. And in the manner in which the move was planned, it will likely involve the occupation of large areas of the Gaza Strip, prolonged territorial holding, the loss of the lives of abductees and soldiers, and the exacerbation of the humanitarian catastrophe among the Palestinians. It is doubtful, however, whether he will achieve a real defeat for Hamas.” [i]

This is a very realistic prediction, since history operates according to its dialectical rules, and the end of the process is the establishment of a democratic state for all the inhabitants of the country, including the refugees who were expelled in 1948 in the Nakba, which the Israeli prime minister wants to repeat. It is now clear to the families of the abductees that the 41 Israelis killed in Gaza died from artillery, bombs, and bullets fired by the Israeli army.

Some think that if Netanyahu is removed and replaced by another bourgeois politician like Bennett or Yair Golan, the situation will improve. This is a pipe dream. Netanyahu is the product of a process that began many years ago in the article “Truth from the Land of Israel,” written following his first visit to the Land of Israel, in 1891, in which Ehad H’am wrote that it was a mistake to see the Arabs as “desert savages” who “do not see and understand what is happening around them,” and predicted that if the Jewish Yishuv pushed the Arabs living in the Land of Israel behind, they would vehemently oppose it.

No other than Ze’ev Jabotinsky, whose alleged student Netanyahu wrote in The Iron Wall: “The reader has a general idea of the history of colonization of other countries. I suggest that he recall all the known examples. After examining the entire list, please try to find at least one example where colonization was done with the consent of the natives. There is no such example. The natives, cultured and non-civilized, have always fought the colonialist settlers stubbornly, cultured and uncultured. This is also true when it comes to Arabs.”

For one democratic state for all the inhabitants of the country, including the refugees!
