Escalation of protests in Los Angeles: The super reactionary Trump ordered the deployment of Marines, making clear that his real enemy is the working class.
In Los Angeles, the escalation continues following arrests by the Federal Immigration Service (ICE), which sparked demonstrations throughout the city. Overnight, the federal government took a dramatic and unusual step: US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of about 700 Marines to the city, for the first time since 1992. The goal: to reinforce the hundreds of National Guard troops already deployed in the city, acting on Trump’s plan to remove one million immigrant workers.
According to ABC, the Marines are expected to arrive in the city within the next 24 hours, and they belong to the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Marine Regiment from Twenty Palms Base, California. According to the U.S. Army’s Northern Command, the unit was put on standby for deployment as early as Sunday. According to government officials, cheap propaganda is the purpose of their deployment in Los Angeles is to protect federal buildings and government personnel amid the growing protests.
The move has sparked a public and political uproar: California Governor Gavin Newsom has strongly condemned the move, calling it “illegal” and announcing his intention to file a lawsuit against the federal government.
In a post on Network X, he wrote: “The Marines serve an important purpose for this country – the defense of democracy. They are not political pawns. The secretary of defense is illegally deploying them on the streets of America so that Trump can make a topic of conversation at his parade this weekend. This is a blatant abuse of power. We will file a lawsuit to stop it. The courts and Congress must act. Balances and brakes are crumbling. This is a red line – and they cross it. Wake up!” His praises of the marines make it clear that the workers cannot trust him. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Buss also joined the criticism, accusing the government of using the city as a “political experiment.”
Meanwhile, clashes continue on the ground: During the night, police dispersed hundreds of demonstrators who had gathered near a federal detention center in the heart of the city, where migrants are being held. According to a Reuters report, police made arrests and used crowd control measures, including “less lethal” ammunition and tear gas. The National Guard forces set up a human barrier to prevent infiltration into the compound.
The Stalinist group, Communist Workers’ Platform, in the USA issued a relatively good statement. Their problem is the lack of internationalism.
In a statement on the current violent clashes in Los Angeles, the Communist Workers’ Platform USA (CWP USA) stresses out:
“Driven by deep convictions on the safety of their fellow working-class members, hundreds of protestors made the courageous decision to directly confront ICE agents. ICE has been a weapon of terror wielded by the ruling class against the workers of this country. Brutalizing migrant workers and breaking up families, Democratic and Republican governments alike have set these dogs on migrant workers. The anger of large sectors of the population with the policies of different managers of capital is growing.
The second Trump administration has ratcheted up ICE raids nationwide since taking office in January. In service of their capitalist masters, they have enthusiastically enacted their directives to detain and deport migrant workers by the thousands.
Workers of this country are disgusted by these terrorist measures. Pushed to action as they were in the 2006-2007 protests to defeat the “Sensenbrenner Bill”, thousands have taken the initiative to resist ICE raids in Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis, and Chicago by blocking ICE agents, obstructing their vehicles, surrounding agents en masse, and other tactics. In response, police and state forces have made indiscriminate arrests, launched tear gas, and even deployed the National Guard. The fabricated claims and pretexts by Trump about looting and gang members are without evidence. The real targets have been workers: seamstresses, construction roofers, and others. This not only exposes the anti-migrant character of these attacks, but also their anti-worker agenda, made clearer by the arrest of union leader David Huerta.
The US, a country with a high degree of capitalist development, is increasingly caught in deepening contradictions, which sometimes find a focal point in California, a state that is among the top capitalist economies in the world, as measured by GDP. The economic system, reinforced by the anti-migrant policies of both Republican and Democratic administrations, is fueling the growing outrage of people demanding the removal of ICE from their communities. Working-class neighborhoods, standing with their migrant brothers and sisters, are mobilizing to resist the Trump administration’s offensive, offering a glimpse of the potential for workers’ power.
But to end, once and for all the conditions which give rise to the repressive and militaristic apparatuses of imperialist power, the National Guard, ICE, and the Marines which are directed by the bourgeois state against its own population, it is necessary to meet the escalation of force by the Trump with the only path forward: the overthrow of capitalism. The Communist Workers’ Platform USA salutes all the brave people putting their personal safety on the line for the sake of their migrant brothers and sisters of the working class. Their actions are a concrete form of class solidarity.
We urge all workers and people ready and willing to fight for migrants and the entire working class to continue their struggle and elevate the fight to direct this energy against the capitalist system that creates the suffering of all workers and sets ICE terror loose on our class.
These protests point to the urgent need to create a revolutionary organization in our country, the Communist Party, that will give direction to all the struggles that emerge from the workers, students, and popular sectors. It is the only organization capable of unifying the struggles and orienting them towards the Socialist Revolution.”
