Some Zionists who tell themselves that the problem is Netanyahu and the far-right ministers, and the next government led by Gantz, Lapid, or Liberman will be better, live in fantasy. It is enough to see their reaction to Yair Golan, the leader of the Left Zionists
Golan said, “Israel is on its way to becoming an assigned country among the nations, the South Africa of the past – if it does not return and run like a sane country. And a sane state does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not set itself the goals of expelling the population. Golan, who was interviewed by Kan Bet, added, “This government is full of types who have nothing to do with Judaism, full of vindictive, immoral types who lack the ability to manage a state in times of emergency. And this is dangerous to our very existence.”[i]
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Golan’s remarks: “I strongly condemn Yair Golan’s wild incitement against our heroic soldiers and against the State of Israel. The IDF is the most moral army in the world, and our soldiers are fighting for our very existence.”
Netanyahu added: “Golan, who encourages refusal and in the past compared Israel to the Nazis while in uniform, has now reached a new low when he claimed that Israel ‘kills babies as a hobby.’ At a time when we are waging a multi-front war and leading complex diplomatic efforts to free our hostages and defeat Hamas, Golan and his friends on the radical left are echoing the most despicable anti-Semitic blood libels against IDF soldiers and the State of Israel. There is no limit to moral decay.”
Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett responded: “The one who murders babies is Hamas and only Hamas.”
The chairman of the national camp, MK Benny Gantz, called on Golan to retract his statement and apologize to the IDF fighters: “IDF soldiers do not ‘kill babies’ as a hobby. These things are not only outrageous, false and extreme, but also endanger the freedom of our heroic fighters before international law.”
Leader of the Opposition, MK Yair Lapid: “Our fighters are heroes and defenders of our lives. The statement that they kill babies as a hobby is wrong and is a gift to our enemies. I back the IDF and its fighters and condemn the statement.”
Yisrael Beitenu Chairman MK Avigdor Liberman condemned Golan’s remarks: “The IDF is the most moral army in the world, and any such false statement against it harms our soldiers and the security of the state.”
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar: “What Golan said will certainly be fuel on the fire of anti-Semitism in the world.”
The President of the European Jewish Congress, Ariel Musikant, has just announced the cancellation of Yair Golan’s planned speech at the World Jewish Congress conference, which is being held today in Jerusalem.
For one secular democratic state for the Israeli Jews and all the Palestinians, including the Palestinian refugees!
