The real position of the Zionist liberals

There is a social stratum in Israel, mainly Ashkenazi adults who see themselves as Zionist liberals. They want a different government, different from Netanyahu’s. Therefore, they will give their vote in the elections to the opposition parties. Especially for Yair Golan’s “Democrats” party. Former deputy chief of staff. After all, he said many months ago that what is happening here is reminiscent of what happened in Europe in the 1930s. Therefore, the liberal argument continues: He will restore Israeli democracy. But not only since he said this with all his might, he has supported the war against Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, but the so-called Israeli democracy has never been a liberal democracy, but an ethnocracy, i.e., a liberal democracy only for the Jews, since until the 1967 war, Palestinians who remained in Israel after the Nakba lived under military rule. The racism against the Palestinian Arab citizens of the State of Israel has not subsided, nor has it intensified, as we see in the West Bank, where the settlers, with the help of the Zionist army, carry out pogroms. And in Gaza, genocide is being committed.

There is no doubt that today there is no pretense of liberal democracy, and Netanyahu’s liberal Zionist opponents seek to turn back the arrow of time to ethnocracy. But bourgeois governments are not inclined to give up the power that their predecessor had accumulated.

In the coming days, the Knesset plenum will apparently pass a law to significantly reduce the role of the Attorney General.  This is a widespread denial of the Attorney General’s powers: his opinion and instructions will have no binding legal validity, his power to present to the court a position contrary to that of the government will be limited, and the way has even been paved for a government decision that will allow him to be dismissed and appointed according to the will of the government and its leader.

This is a law that strengthens the power of the Zionist Bonapartist regime, from which the Zionist Jews are also harmed, who will be even more exposed to the arbitrariness and short-term interests of the government and those on its behalf, but the last thing they want is a liberal democracy that means a democratic state from the sea to the river instead of the existing apartheid from the sea to the river.

These liberals mistakenly assume that the next government – assuming it is not the current one – will repeal this law. But it probably won’t. The reason for this is that no government, whether of the Zionist left or of the Zionist right, will be in a hurry to restore the powers of the attorney general, and will not limit itself on the manner of his dismissal and appointment. No bourgeois government likes to be restricted in its power.

In practice, those who vote for the Democrats will vote for a right-wing government that can be headed: Eisenkot, Bennett or Liberman. Any support, and certainly joining such a government of Arab parties, will be a vote for the Democrats and a right-wing Zionist government Yair Golan, leader of the most left-wing “Democrats” in Zionism, tweeted four days after October 7 in the Gaza envelope that prevents the right of return  that “a full blockade must be imposed on Gaza. Not a single drop of water, not a crumb of food […] Only such pressure will bring Hamas to the understanding that continued fighting means the end of the organization.”
