The Sense of Despair of the Zionist Liberals

Yossi Schwartz, ISL (RCIT section in Israel/Occupied Palestine) 23.10.2026

The crimes of the Zionist entity have not begun in 2023 but with the beginning of the Zionist colonialist settlements, and the Zionist Liberals took part in these crimes. Today they begin to understand that the end to this state is close. The liberal Zionist like Ben Caspit dreams of saving Israel by going back. Other Zionist liberals like Retired Col. Arad and retired Brig. Gen. Haskel are members of the “555 Patriots — Air Fighters for the Defense of Democracy” forum, go further and want to return to an earlier stage in the criminal process as the way to save the Zionist project. As Zionists they cannot admit the forming Israel by the Nakba was a crime.

Ben Caspit, a central journalist of Maariv, believes that replacing Netanyahu will save Israel. He writes:

“I’ve been writing here for decades. This is the most important column I’ve ever written in my life.

In four days, the struggle for the future of the State of Israel will be decided | For its continued existence as a Jewish power of progress and enlightenment, for the prosperity of democracy and for our place in the family of nations. We must not give up any voice.

To make sure that everyone is voting. To try, until the last minute, to convince our brothers and sisters that they don’t understand this, that they will understand. Not giving up any vote. Maybe we won’t have another chance. It’s here and now. This is an event that is very similar to that historic vote on the partition proposal in the UN General Assembly. Only this time does our dream not need a two-thirds majority. It needs 61 seats.

The struggle is between the original Zionism and the messianic nationalism that arose upon it.  Between the alliance of the servants and the corporation of dodgers. Between “we will die and we will not enlist” and those who enlist and sometimes even die. Between those who rely on the state’s table and do not bear the burden, and those who kneel under the burden and carry the table on their backs. Between Goldknopf and Bennett. Between Deri and Eisenkot. Between Tali Gottlieb and Avigdor Lieberman. Between those who fight Israel’s enemies and those who revolt against Israel and prefer the British Mandate. Between Yonatan Urich and Yonatan Shalev.

Victory is within reach. It’s not certain, it’s not closed, it’s not over. Benjamin Netanyahu will do everything, including everything, to continue to cling to power and drag Israel into the abyss. Yes, including war. We have to hope and pray that there will be someone to stop him. There is nothing that can be attacked in the next four days that will not be possible to attack after a new government is formed in Israel. This is not an assumption, but a fact. And for those who have forgotten: It was Netanyahu himself, in a seminal speech, who preached and accused Ehud Olmert of not making any fateful decision as prime minister when he was embroiled in criminal investigations.  That was long before indictments were filed against Olmert. The conflict of interest was already crying out then, Netanyahu said. And he was right.

Four days before the elections, Netanyahu’s campaign looks like running the country.  Total chaos, dealing with trifles and burrowing into disasters.  In recent weeks, the possibility of announcing that this will be his last term has once again arisen in his circle. This idea came up last time as well, but it went down.  He will go down this time as well. The very fact that he went up testifies to the mood and the situation.

From decades of acquaintance, I can testify: Eisenkot is a rare man, straight as level, inside as he is, a true Israeli patriot,  a success story of the second Israel, the third coming, who was born in Tiberias and grew up in Eilat, the son of Moroccan immigrants, who never complained.  He preferred to excel. He is the perfect negative of Benjamin Netanyahu. There is no one in Israel who caught Gadi Eisenkot with a lie. Just as there is no one who caught Benjamin Netanyahu with the truth.

The optimism lies in what is happening on the street. Gadi Eisenkot filled halls this week , to the brim, in five Likud strongholds: Dimona, Yeruham, Be’er Sheva, Ramla and Givat Shmuel. Bennett continues to burn the ground in parliaments and in incessant friction with anyone who is willing to look at him. Liberman focuses on “soft” religious Zionism and a secular right, but also on the economic elite that likes him. Yair Golan is dealing with what is left here from the left and hopes to bring a mandate from the Arab street. Tens of thousands of Israelis are flocking to Israel right now to exercise their right to vote.  And we need to storm the polls on Tuesday and make sure everyone votes.

One more small thing: These elections must not turn into a confrontation or descend into violence. We must stay away from violence in any form. I trust the systems that were set up to oversee the integrity of the elections and the systems that were set up to prevent Netanyahu and his followers from undermining the results, if they don’t like them.

I trust the Central Elections Committee and its head, who is a religious right-winger, a settler, but also an honest judge. You must trust the police as well.

Yes, I know, the Ben Gvir police and all that, and Danny Levy was appointed by this government and by Ben Gvir, etc., etc., etc. But Superintendent Danny Levy is also a policeman. He did all the policing duties, starting at the bottom and reaching the top. He knows that he is a historic police commissioner who oversees public safety and public order and the holding of elections on days that are not historic. I hope he understands the magnitude of the hour and the task. He needs to think about the trial of history, and only about it.

From now until Election Day, we need to talk about only one thing: the ultra-Orthodox issue. That’s the main issue. It’s the tiebreaker. It’s the bedrock of disagreement. It’s the watershed between the two camps that face each other. The right-left debate is irrelevant. Very few Israelis disagree with the desire to disarm Hamas, demilitarize the Gaza Strip, and prevent a situation in which it becomes a threat again. Very few Israelis disagree that Hezbollah should also disarm or fold into its tunnels without the possibility of reinforcement. Very few Israelis take the dangers of the Iranian threat lightly and do not agree that everything must be done so that the regime there falls and the nuclear program is shelved.

The upcoming elections on Tuesday are just that. About Israel’s continued existence as a power of enlightenment, technology, progress, and development. About the prosperity of democracy, which will also include checks and balances and return us to the bosom of the family of nations. About our ability to sustain ourselves and continue to be, at any cost and always, the strongest power, by a distance, within a radius of thousands of kilometers from Jerusalem. For that to happen, we must form a government on Wednesday morning that will include a Zionist, productive, patriotic and determined coalition of servants. It is possible. It is the most possible it has ever been.”

Retired Col. Arad and retired Brig. Gen. Haskel, who are members of the “555 Patriots — Air Fighters for the Defense of Democracy” forum, attack the Netanyahu regime and go further. They write: “Under the cover of the war, the brutal attack against Israeli democracy and the Zionist ethos itself continued even more intensely. Basic values of the sanctity of life, solidarity, the sanctity of bereaved families, the redemption of prisoners, and the purity of weapons were desecrated beyond recognition.  The deepening of the incitement and division has led to a deep rift in the nation, and it is highly doubtful that it will be able to heal it.  Israel’s international and moral standing has been eroded to the brim.

The framing of the elections as a struggle for Israel’s image is lacking. In fact, what is at stake is more serious: for the first time since the protest and the struggle for Israel’s image began, we have come to realize that there is a real danger of Israel’s physical loss, the destruction of the Third Temple.

We are on the brink of a deep abyss, a step from falling into complete darkness from which it is doubtful that there will be a way back. This is a lesson from our distant history, in which we experienced the destruction of the Temple twice; and it is a lesson of other people, even in modern times, who did not manage to avoid falling and paid a heavy price.

Israel is a small country, with no strategic depth, surrounded by threats, and largely dependent on its international standing in general, and its relations with the United States and Western countries. Considering the deterioration of relations with Western countries, and especially with the American public, it is no longer possible to assume that if the foundations of the state collapse, there will be someone to mobilize to rehabilitate it.

What has happened since then is a different story. The anger and feelings of revenge were exploited to the fullest by a man who saw the war as an opportunity to preserve his rule and escape the fear of the law. He was joined by the Kahanist haters of man, and with them also the Messians, who appropriated the name “religious Zionism” for themselves, even though they have nothing and Zionism has nothing to do with it, and there is no God in their hearts.  The former saw a war of revenge as an opportunity to give free rein to racism and hatred of Arabs. The others saw in their vision a religious eternal war, which would make it possible to realize the vision of the Greater Land of Israel, without Arabs, which heralds the coming of the Messiah. Each other, in their madness and lowliness, helped the most despicable man in the history of Israel to destroy everything here.

Under the cover of the war, the brutal attack against Israeli democracy and the Zionist ethos itself continued even more intensely.

The deterioration has exposed a completely corrupt political system and the structural and institutional weakness of all the mechanisms that are supposed to function as gatekeepers, including the judiciary and law enforcement branches.  A special place is reserved for the mainstream media, most of which has failed to fulfill its role as the watchdog of democracy, and has normalized everything, including his candidacy in the upcoming elections for the prime minister of the person responsible for the disaster — which, in any other democratic country, it is doubtful that he would have survived one day in office.  The “patriotic” media is largely to blame for the development of false consciousness, because it did not fairly communicate reality to the country’s citizens, and reinforced narratives of Victimization along the lines of “the whole world is against us” and “everyone is anti-Semitic.”

We could stop here and say: Look at this as a wake-up call – the upcoming elections are extremely fateful, because we are dealing with a struggle for Israel’s image. If we do not remove the malicious government from the country, the face of Israel will change beyond recognition. It will be a country that will drive away all the creative and liberal forces from here and will inevitably become impoverished. It will be a country where life will be difficult, where most of the world will be alienated, where it will suffer from boycotts, where social tensions will be unbearable, where its citizens will not be able to travel abroad, and where even world Jewry will be cut off from it. It will be a place where the vision of “a people will dwell alone, and the nations will not be considered.”

But the framing of the elections as a struggle for Israel’s image is lacking. In fact, what is at stake is more serious: for the first time since the protest and the struggle for Israel’s image began, we have come to realize that there is a real danger of Israel’s physical loss, the destruction of the Third Temple.”

Joe Hill (born Joel Emmanuel Hägglund, October 7, 1879 – November 19, 1915) was a Swedish American labor activist, poet, and songwriter who was murdered by the capitalists and coined the phrase “Pie in the sky” to mean illusion.

The only salvation for the Israeli Jews is to break with Zionism and struggle alongside the Palestinians for a red democratic Palestinians state from the river to the sea.
