Opposition to the existence of Israel is widespread in the United States, on the New Right and the New Left. The Old Right supported Israel and denied that it was committing war crimes, and the Old Left recognized Israel and criticized the government’s policy in Jerusalem. Today, both the New Right, whose positions include anti-Semitic claims, and the New American Left, which believes that Israel is committing the crimes that white settlers committed against the Native Americans, and that this can be prevented by eliminating the apartheid state.
An example of the new right is retired Colonel Douglas McGregor, who previously served as a senior advisor to the US Department of Defense and claims that “it is hard to believe that Israel will survive as a nation-state,” retired American Colonel Douglas McGregor claimed this week. This statement joined a series of claims, including the “Greater Israel” theory, which he said also includes parts of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt and Iraq, alongside statements about “Zionist billionaires” “controlling the finances” in New York, Washington and London.
McGregor said the following in a conversation with Norwegian professor Glenn Desen, a researcher in international relations at the University of Southeast Norway, which was published this week under the title “The US has been defeated in Iran and Israel will not survive.”
The focus of the conversation was the “Mecca Agreement” signed on August 7th between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. The agreement includes a commitment that an armed attack on one of the three countries will be considered an attack on all of them. The leaders of the countries emphasized after the signing that the alliance is not directed against a specific country, and the Turkish Foreign Minister also clarified that Iran is not defined as a common threat.
“I think we’re talking about the Greater Israel project,” McGregor said. He argued that the project, as he interprets it, includes not only the Gaza Strip and Judea and Samaria, but also Lebanon, Jordan, most of Syria and parts of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. According to him, the countries in the region understand that they can no longer fully rely on the United States for their defense.
Later in the conversation, McGregor sharpened his tone and assessed that the balance of power in the Middle East was changing to Israel’s detriment. He said, “Without the United States and its armed forces, Israel has no chance of surviving,” and he argued that Israel cannot realize the regional ambitions he attributes to it without American assistance. Towards the end of the conversation, he said: “In the long term, I find it hard to believe that Israel will survive as a nation-state in the region”
Alongside his clear political analysis, McGregor also made anti-Semitic conspiratorial statements. He claimed that the American government was “controlled by Zionist billionaires,” and later asked, “Who controls the financial situation in New York and Washington, and who controls it in London”
Zionism is a death trap for the Jews. The only way for the Jews to survive is to break with Zionism and support a red democratic Palestine from the river to the sea.
